Broadway On Your TV Tonight!
One of the classics of the American theatre is coming to a TV set near you tonight.
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” premieres tonight on PBS stations around the country as part of their “Live from Lincoln Center” series. Showtime is 8pm ET, although some markets may choose to show the musical on a delay or another night, so be sure to check your local listings.
Believe it or not, this is the very first Broadway revival of this favorite…and it’s done almost perfectly, thanks to a great cast, fantastic sets and a full 30-piece orchestra (rare for shows these days). Kelli O’Hara earned her third Tony nomination for her performance as Nellie Forbush, while her co-star Paulo Szot earned the 2008 Best Actor Tony Award for his portrayal of Emile de Becque. The principal cast also includes Tony nominees Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary and Danny Burstein as Luther Billis. Andrew Samonsky plays Lt. Cable.
I had the pleasure of seeing this amazing production live last year in NYC and can’t wait to see it again, even if it is on the small screen. As a special bonus, actor Alan Alda (a huge fan of the show) will host the broadcast and interview relatives of composers Rodgers & Hammerstein during intermission. This is one of the best productions to grace the Great White Way in some time – don’t miss it!
