German Beer-Grilled Bratwurst Recipe from Viking River Cruises

We love sharing our favorite food moments from cruises – and here’s one from our friends at Viking River Cruises.

Next time you have a summer gathering, try this beer-grilled bratwurst. It is easy and delicious and you can serve it on hot dog buns, hard rolls or any other type of bread. Adjust quantities depending on number of guests. We suggest you serve a bowl of sauerkraut or potato salad on the side.

When you travel to Germany with Viking River Cruises, you can sample bratwurst and all its traditional accompaniments. And if you take a holiday season cruise, you can sample many more local delicacies at the Christmas markets. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
5 good-quality bratwurst sausages
Pilsner beer, enough to cover bratwurst in a pan
2 large onions, halved, peeled and sliced
1 pat butter
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
Combine bratwurst, beer and onions in a saucepan and place over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, cover and remove from heat. Allow to stand at least 30 minutes.

Remove bratwurst from beer, strain onions and discard beer. Heat a saucepan over moderate heat (this can be done on the grill) add butter and onions and cook until just browned. Season with salt and pepper as desired.

Grill bratwurst until nice grill marks have formed and sausage is warmed through.

Place brats on buns, garnish with onions, add condiments according to your tastes. Best enjoyed with gourmet mustard and homemade sauerkraut or potato salad.

Makes 5 servings.
