ABOUT THIS PORT – GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS

Living up to its name, the majestic Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands.

Local Culture and Flavor
The limestone Cayman Islands are actually the top land masses of a giant underwater mountain range. The majority of the islanders live in Grand Cayman—and they are a lively bunch! The festive spirit of the area attracts tourists from all over with the allure of exotic marine life, warm waters, sun-drenched beaches and delicious cuisine.

Past and Present
Archeological evidence of humans inhabiting the islands dates all the way to the 16th century. When Christopher Columbus spotted them in 1503, he dubbed the island “Las Tortugas” for the abundance of sea turtles he saw there. In 1670, the islands were captured and ceded to England. The first Cayman constitution was issued in 1959, just 3 years before they broke away from Jamaica and became a distinguished British Overseas Territory. While the islands have weathered past issues such as high inflation, poverty and hurricanes, they have also attracted and maintained a population of culturally diverse and mixed people who take pride in their heritage and welcome visitors each year.

Things to See and Do
There is plenty to see and do in Grand Cayman! Hike through a 65-acre woodland reserve, visit a seaside village with a curious name and shop ’til you drop on George Town’s fashionable Cardinal Avenue. If you choose to take a tour, don’t miss the rum cake samples at the rum factory—but beware, the rum is real!

Shopping
Watches, china, perfumes, jewelry, leather, rum cakes, local crafts and treasure coins are available at reduced prices at George Town’s shops on Grand Cayman. Meander your way through the main district on Cardinal Avenue, home to well-known jewelers, galleries specializing in local artwork and clothing boutiques. In April, you can also celebrate Cayfest with musicians, cooks and artists!

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park
Discover a treasure trove of mahoganies, agave thickets, native palms and cacti in this peaceful 65-acre woodland reserve, along with such animal species as the Cayman blue iguana, the West Indian whistling duck and the majestic Cayman parrot.

Hell
Send a postcard from this seaside village’s post office and add a quirky postmark to your collection of souvenirs and curiosities. There are also novelty items to purchase “from Hell,” and photos to snap along Hell’s beautiful coastline, which—paradoxically—looks like sheer paradise. A guided tour of Hell is available as part of various Port Adventures.

Pedro St. James Historic Site
History springs to life at the birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands. Once known as Pedro Castle, this structure was built in 1780. The picturesque structure burned to the ground in 1989, but has been meticulously restored and declared a national landmark.

Cayman Islands National Museum
Visit this marvelous museum, dedicated to preserving artifacts related to the history and culture of the islands. Located in buildings dating back to the late 19th century, the museum showcases time-tested methods of rope-making, fishing and roof-thatching.

One of the most-asked questions about Disney Cruise Line is: Will there be fun for adults too? The answer is a big YES!

Every Disney Cruise Line ship has an adults-only pool and several lounges/bars that are exclusively for adults. On the Disney Fantasy, “Europa” is the adults-only area of the ship. The central hub is La Piazza, an Italian themed bar with a carousel as its centerpiece.

Surrounding La Piazza are the entrances to the other adult areas, including:

SKYLINE BAR

Imagine a bar where the view changes every few minutes. Through the magic of Disney, the “view” from this bar switches to a different world capital city every few minutes, plus it adapts depending on the time of day. During your visit you may see any of the following cities: Paris, London, Barcelona, Athens, Florence, Budapest and St. Petersburg.

OOH LA LA

Ooh La La is inspired by an elegant French boudoir adorned with velvet tufted walls, Victorian furniture and Louis XIV-style chaise lounges. A sensuous color palette is accented with ornate framed mirrors, gold details and a “jewel box” feature bar backed with sparkling diamond-like facets.

THE TUBE

The Tube transports guests to a vibrant metropolitan club via the London Underground. Guests “mind the gap” as they walk across a tube route map, lounge among mod furniture, dance atop an illuminated Union Jack dance floor and enjoy cocktails at a bar inspired by London.

O’GILLS PUB

O’Gills Pub is a rollicking Irish bar with modern-day twists exclusive for adult guests. Dark woods, brass accents and a selection of Irish beers create the perfect pub atmosphere where adult guests can sip a pint or sample O’Gills Irish Cream.

In our next blog, we’ll explore one of the exclusive events to Disney Cruise Line: Pirate night and the Pirates IN the Caribbean Deck Party. Until we meet again, a virtual “good night” from onboard Disney Fantasy.
