Recipe: Traditional German Gluhwein

We love sharing recipes from the bars & restaurants our clients encounter during their journeys. Today, here’s a great holiday drink, courtesy of our friends at Amadeus River Cruises.

TRADITIONAL GERMAN GLUHWEIN

Ingredients:
1 liter Red Wine
150g Sugar
4 cubes white or brown sugar
1 stick cinnamon
10 pieces whole cloves
1 Orange
1 Lemon

Instructions:
1) Gently warm wine in a pot on low or medium heat. Avoid boiling. Add sugar, juice of a fresh orange, and a lemon.
2) Scrape the peel of the orange and the lemon with the sugar cubes.
3) Put the cloves in a tea strainer (to make removal easy) and put it into the pot.
4) Add orange and lemon peel and the cinnamon stick.
5) Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat.
6) Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolved completely.
7) Let the mulled wine simmer for a few minutes, then remove the cloves and cinnamon.
8) Pour the wine in a festive cup and garnish with orange or lemon slices and cinnamon sticks.
