The day-long event began with a fabulous Mother’s Day brunch in the Sapphire dining room. At the conclusion of the meal, officials from Carnival, the Houston Texans and the City of Galveston participated in the welcoming ceremonies. It’s a maritime tradition to give a ship a plaque from each city when the ship makes its inaugural call there. In addition, the Captain of the Breeze was also given a key to the city, which he promised to use wisely.

Once brunch and the ceremonies were over, it was time for the big event – Moms Dash to the Splash.

Carnival and the Houston Texans recently signed a multi-year partnership and to kick it off, they decided to host moms on Mother’s Day in a water slide race challenge featuring Houston Texans players Brian Cushing and DeAndre Hopkins. Over 3000 local moms registered but only a handful were selected to participate.

There are two giant water slides on Carnival Breeze and each team would take their turn sliding down. They were timed and once their last member had reached the finish, their time would be recorded. The team with the best overall time after taking on both giant slides would be declared the winner.

After a Texas-sized coin toss, it was determined that Team Cush would go first, followed by Team De-Hop. The orange slide was first, followed by the yellow slide. Both drop over three decks and are very fast.

After both teams had tackled the two slides, Team Cush was announced as the winner and the Brian Cushing Foundation earned $10,000 from Carnival. For placing second, DeAndre Hopkins’ charity, The Houston Food Bank, received $5,000. Then came the big surprise – Carnival Cruise Line gave each mom who participated a free 7-night cruise on Carnival Breeze for up to 4 guests.
